Next Week Lent Begins

Ash Wednesday falls on February 14 (Valentine’s Day) and is the beginning of the season of Lent—the forty days leading up to the Triduum and the great feast of Easter. It is a time of prayer and penance. There are two days of fast—Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means that those between the ages of 18 to 59 should have two between. Abstinence is for all the baptized and means no meat on that day. Ashes will be distributed at Masses at 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. They will also be distributed at prayer services at noon and 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon. So, for the sanity of the office staff and the priests, please do not call the rectory and ask when ashes are being given out. Also, the priests will not make house calls to give ashes.

Fish Fry

The Warwick Valley Knights will be conducting two Fish Fries on Friday, February 16 and Friday, March 9. They will take place in the school gym from 5:00 until 7 p.m.

The Feast of St. Blaise

St. Blaise was a bishop in what is now Turkey in the 4th century. Tradition tells us that as he was led to his death, he blessed the throat of a child who was choking. The child recovered. Since then, on his feast day (February 3) we offer the traditional blessing of throats. We will do this on Saturday and after all the Masses on Sunday.
