On Sunday, August 14th at 5 pm, Pacem in Terris welcomes Gregory Hayes-organ, Krista Bennion Feeney –violin, John Feeney –bass, and Joanna Hood-viola, with a special program of music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Ernest Bloch, and Shinji Eshima.

Gregory Hayes retired this spring as Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College, where he has taught piano and harpsichord since 1991. He is a busy collaborative musician and has performed on keyboard instruments of various kinds with the Springfield, Vermont, and Albany Symphony Orchestras and with Arcadia Players, a regional period-instrument ensemble. He has participated often in the New England Bach Festival and on the Mohawk Trail Concerts series in western Massachusetts. Formerly the longtime music director for the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence, he is a resident of Goshen (Massachusetts), and he has taught for many summers at Greenwood Music Camp in nearby Cummington. Mr. Hayes is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Amherst College and the Manhattan School of Music.

Krista Bennion Feeney, described as “a violinist with a gift for elegant phrasing” by the New York Times, April 19, 2022, is very active as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral leader in both historical and modern settings. From 1979-1992 Krista was the founding member and first violinist of the Ridge String Quartet, recipients of the Diapason d’Or award and nominated for a Grammy for their recording of the Dvorak Piano Quintets with Rudolf Firkusny. She’s served as concertmaster of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s since 1983 and from 1999-2006 she was the music director of the New Century Chamber Orchestra. “Her deep notes were rich and melancholy … there was a tender exuberance in both tumbles of notes and sustained phrases … a dramatic interplay of ferocity and light slyness.” The New York Times, May ’14.

John Feeney is principal double bass of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the American Classical Orchestra and Opera Lafayette. A chamber musician and soloist of renown, first prize-winner of the Concert Artists Guild and Zimmerman-Mingus International Competitions, medalist-prizewinner of the Geneva and Isle of Man Competitions. New York Times: “a skilled and passionate performance…… bravura solo passages that feature rapid passage work and double stops, …. played with flair.”  The Strad : “There is much  virtuosity on display….. accurate, muscular and impressively controlled playing…” N.Y Times: “the charismatic double bass of John Feeney..”  He’s recorded for most major record labels – holding Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Juilliard, a scholarship student of David Walter

Violist Joanna Hood is the violist of Canada’s Lafayette String Quartet, the only all-female ensemble in the world to comprise of the four original members for more than thirty five years. As associate professor at the University of Victoria, in Victoria, BC, she teaches viola and chamber music, leads the schools baroque, and the new music ensemble. Hood plays with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, and is a co-founder of the Victoria based new music ensemble Tsilumos. She was the violist of the Loma Mar Quartet, the DNA Quintet, and frequently played with The Orchestra of St. Luke’s (in New York City), and was a founding member of the LA based new music quartet, Eclipse.

Hood plays on a viola made by Edmond Aireton in 1754.
