Happy Summer Solstice
This year the summer solstice falls on June 20th. In ancient times this event was very significant. Today, most of us are more attuned to the light emanating from our smartphones as opposed to the one in the sky. However us farmers can’t buy sunlight on Amazon, at least not yet, so we must continue to pay close attention to the sun. As the daylight hours slowly wane post-solstice, crops begin to mature and farmers begin preparations for harvest.
Making Hay
Despite the abundance around us right now, we must think ahead to colder days when the grass is no longer growing. Haymaking is a blend of art and science. Old timers knew just the right feel before it was ready to put into the barn. It’s hard to substitute that judgment with mechanical instruments.
Hay is a critical to ensuring the cattle and sheep can get through the winter months. We have a bit of envy for the farmers in New Zealand where the grass grows year round!
Grass-Fed Lamb Back in Stock!
We know that some of you have been patiently waiting for us to get Lamb in. We are happy to announce that our grass-fed lamb will be available again at the new farm store this Saturday June 19th.
As we had mentioned in earlier newsletters, many of the local mom and pop butchers that we use got very busy during the pandemic. They made the decision to prioritize processing Cattle and Pigs and unfortunately Lambs were turned away. This was because the butchers get paid by weight and lambs are comparatively small. However now that things are starting to ‘normalize’ again the butchers have resumed accepting Lambs.
Farm Store
As a reminder, the new farm store is located at 438 Route 94, Vernon, NJ. This is about an 8-minute drive from the farm, near the Appalachian trail-head at the base of the Wawayanda Mountains.
We are open Saturdays and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
Now featuring Short Rib ravioli made with Lowland Farm’s Grass Fed Beef. All pastas are made from scratch then hand rolled.

Our Approach:
  At Lowland Farm, meat is
  • Responsibly Raised: Cows and sheep graze pastures and eat hay exclusively, the food that best suits their ruminant stomachs. Pigs live naturally, foraging in woodland habitats.
  • Sustainably Grazed:  We rotationally graze on our rolling pastures and woodlands, which keeps fields and forests healthy and minimizes erosion and silting of Pochuck Creek.
  • Reasonably Priced:  We do not think that “local and natural at any price” is a sustainable approach.
Please forward this newsletter to anyone you think may be interested in a local farm specializing in responsibly raised, sustainably grazed, and reasonably priced beef, lamb, pork, and poultry. For more information, visit our website: lowlandfarm.com
Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at the store.
Sincerely,
Lowland Farm staff
