12th Annual Black Dirt Feast To Be Held August 9thSAVE THE DATE!
Dear Friend,
You are receiving this email because you are a friend of the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce, you attended the Black Dirt Feast in the past, or you have expressed interest in the past. Please watch your inbox for additional emails with more details

The Black Dirt Feast is back after a two-year Covid-driven absence. The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce is overjoyed to be able to, once again, showcase the high quality produce from local farms, and the award-winning chefs who will prepare the gourmet meals at this year’s feast.

This farm to table celebration pairs a sumptuous al fresco meal with fine wines on the great lawn of Glenwood Green in Pine Island. Guests will be seated under a large tent, Tuscan style, at long tables with elegant linens as they relax at sunset, and listen to live music in the breathtaking black dirt region. Guests will enjoy cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres as part of a tasting menu of local salad, soup, fish, poultry, meat and dessert, all from award winning local restaurants who donate their time and staff. Vegetarian options will be available.

The servers and helpers will be Warwick Valley Middle and High School volunteers. Flowers and custom arrangements will be provided by Flowers by Lisa in Pine Island.

This year’s Feast will be held on Tuesday, August 9 from 6 to 9 pm. Tickets are $150.00 per person, and will be available starting June 1(not before) to the general public on our websitewww.pineislandny.com, or by email to jerryzim@gmail.com. Please write BDF 2022 in the header of your email. Seating is limited to 252 guests, and we have always sold out quickly.

Pine Island Chamber members, new and renewed, will be able to order tickets starting May 17 using a special link in an email to be sent that day.

The Pine Island Chamber of Commerce uses the proceeds from the Black Dirt Feast to donate to several local food pantries, fund beautification initiatives in Pine Island, and, even during the pandemic, the Chamber has continued to award Black Dirt Scholarships to deserving youth in our community. This year, three scholarships of $1,500 each will be given to deserving town of Warwick graduating seniors, or students in good standing at a college or university who are, or will be, enrolled in a program for agriculture, equestrian studies, culinary arts, the hospitality Industry or arts and sciences.

A full color program guide will describe the hamlet of Pine Island, its history, the nature of the community and the on-going collaboration between farmers and consumers. It will include an ad from each sponsor, the menu, biographical sketches of the chefs, and a list of the source farms for this year’s menu.

Hoping to see you at this year’s Black Dirt Feast,
Jerry Zimmerman,
For the 2022 Black Dirt Feast Committee

The former Mid-Orange Correctional Facility has an extensive, and often unsettling, history.

Its origins date back to the 1930s when it was built as a reform school for boys. The school housed about 400 teens at any given time and remained in use until 1976. It is said that at least one of the boys had prematurely ended his stay within one of the dormitories. And many others have continued to prolong their stay long after death, touching guests and closing doors on them- playing with their minds along with any possessions. But the story does not end with a few playful sprites.

In 1976, when the reformatory was closed, it was converted into a correctional facility. This was when it was at its most populated, boasting almost 1,000 inmates housed by 1989. This was its primary function until June of 2011 when it was closed alongside six other state prisons. It is from these men, some of whom had committed the vilest atrocities imaginable, that the complex gets most of its haunts. Bangs, shrieks, inaudible threats, thudding feet… apparitions. It is thanks to them that some of the floors of the schoolhouse remain inaccessible to the public. Although this is done to protect any guests from injury, locked doors mean nothing to the dead.

Prison of Horrors
Think You’re Brave?
Think Again! As recently shown on Travel Channel’s Ghost Nation,

Our grounds are full of dark history as well as frightening mystery!

Are you brave enough to step foot on our grounds and discover what is laying beneath?

Prison of Horrors has found its strength in embracing the terror rather than avoiding it. And for the fourth year in a row, we seek to spread that terror to the masses. Our haunts may be an act, but the fear is real- and, for those lucky few, so are the ghosts. Come stay with us awhile, will you? But be careful when you leave us… for fear is infectious.

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols @ St. Stephen Church
Nov 8 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Join in singing for Lessons & Carols on December 3rd!
Image
Each year during Advent, churches take part in a “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols” which is a service of scripture readings or “lessons” recounting salvation history from the fall of humanity, to the promise of the Messiah, and to the birth of the baby Jesus. As a response to each lesson, the choirs and congregation join in songs and “carols” echoing the message proclaimed in scripture. This is a wonderful way to enter into the Advent season and have great joy for the celebration of Christ’s birth.
St. Stephen’s Church will have its Lessons and Carols service on Sunday, December 3rd at 3pm.
Rehearsals for this service of prayer, scripture, and song will formally begin on Wednesday, November 8th from 7-9PM in the Church. The list of subsequent rehearsal dates are below. Please consider sharing your gift of song with our parish during this most special season!
Rehearsals from 7-9PM:
Wednesday, November 8th in the Church
Wednesday, November 15th in the Parish Community Center
Monday, November 20th in the Church
