Affordable Housing for Veterans in Orange County NY
Several elected officials in the lower Hudson Valley region will serve dinner to guests at an upcoming fundraising event for veterans housing at the Landmark Inn in Warwick NY, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 7PM.
Described as “Public servants serving the public” the At Your Service event will include the following invitees: former NY State Senator Mike Martucci (now head of Mid-Hudson News); NY State Assemblyman Karl Brabanec; NY State Assemblyman Brian Maher; Warwick Town Supervisor Michael Sweeton; Florida Mayor Dan Harter, Jr.; Greenwood Lake Mayor Matt Buckley; Village of Warwick Mayor Michael Newhard; Ulster County Supervisor, Jen Metzger; Orange County Supervisor, Steve Neuhaus; NY State Senator James Skoufis; and Congressman Pat Ryan, US House of Representatives.
The group will be pressed into service for the event to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing for America’s veterans, a cause that the Rumshock Veterans Foundation has been working on for the last four years, since its inception.
A Unique Menu
Each waiter team will be given a specific table to serve a three-course dinner that will include Carved Roast Beef with Bordelaise or Horseradish Sauce, Roasted Potatoes, Sautéed Broccoli Spears, Cauliflower Steaks (vegan option), sliced bread, coffee, tea, soft drinks, assorted cookies and meat-themed candy. There will also be a Featured Drink “The Rumshock” made from Dark Rum, Ginger Liqueur, Lime juice, and Prosecco.
In addition, the waiter-officials will bus the tables, clear the plates and silverware, and attend to the requests of guests who may prefer fresh ground pepper, or additional rolls, or substitutions. After all the guests have been served, the elected officials will be seated among them to enjoy the dinner and conversation as well.
Terry Anderson, a guest at last year’s dinner, is a former foreign correspondent in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. He served as chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, as well as working as a newspaper editor, television and radio reporter and documentary producer. He is a former Marine and Vietnam veteran, and author of the best-selling book, “Den of Lions,” recounting the seven years he was held hostage in Lebanon. “This event is a great example of another way in which we can help our veterans,” said Anderson, who went on to urge other residents of the Hudson Valley to keep Rumshock on their radar.
Rumshock Veterans Foundation, a nonprofit founded in February 2019 to provide military members with post-service support, received $400,000 that was secured and announced by New York State Sen. Jen Metzger’s office in 2019. In 2022, then NY State Sen. Mike Martucci, who had succeeded Metzger, continued the effort to secure the grant, which was used to acquire property in one of Orange County’s first affordable housing projects for veterans, in Port Jervis.
There are five components to the Foundation’s sustainable program: 1) Rumshock Village, a tiny residential community of 10 tiny affordable houses for veterans (see attached layout from architect Ted Donnell); 2) hydroponic farming, maintained by Village residents; 3) transportation to assist Village residents in making appointments to healthcare providers and other necessities; 4) e-waste recycling, involving the recovery of materials to be used in future production; and 5) canine companionship, for emotional support. Construction on this unique project is expected to begin in the spring of 2024.

WARWICK- On Sunday, June 9th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Hudson Valley Pollinator Project and Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery are proud to present the 2nd Annual Pollinator Music Festival. Set amidst the verdant gardens of the Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery, this festival is more than just a gathering; it’s a celebration of life, music, food, and the tiny creatures that make our world bloom. The focus of the event is to bring awareness and attention to the disappearance of pollinators, like butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees.
A Cause that Counts: All proceeds go to supporting the Hudson Valley Pollinator Project and the Warwick High School Music Scholarship Fund.
Legendary Lineup: Enjoy iconic acts and heartwarming local talents.
Feast for the Senses: Indulge in a spread of delectable treats and award-winning beverages.
Be Part of the Solution: Learn about the critical role pollinators play in our ecosystem and how we can join forces to protect them. Leave with native plants to help restore pollinator populations.
Did You Know? Nearly 40 percent of our cherished pollinators are at risk. From the majestic monarch butterflies to the industrious bees, these essential beings need our help. Over the last few decades, the insects that fertilize our crops, flowers, and trees are decreasing to dangerously low levels and many of them may soon be listed as Endangered or Threatened. The Eastern Monarch, for instance, has declined by 85% over the last decade. The largest problem facing the pollinators is starvation. We are systematically removing their food sources by eliminating native plants, and replacing them with perfectly manicured lawns, buildings, roadways, etc.
At the festival, you’ll have the chance to contribute to their survival by participating in a Native Plant Sale, designed to turn your garden into a haven for pollinators.
The Hudson Valley Pollinator Project of Orange Environment was developed in collaboration between Warwick Valley Winery & Distillery’s Dr. Joseph Grizzanti and Dr. Anne Wibiralske the Science Director of Orange Environment. The HVPP aims to educate and encourage people to plant native species in their yards to restore patches of biodiversity and natural habitats for our pollinators.
Don’t let this event flutter by! Pre-order for just $15 tickets at www.wvwinery.com or $20 at the door at the Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery, 114 Little York Road, Warwick, NY.
