Solstice Candelight Peace Vigil @ Railroad Green

Solstice Candelight Peace Vigil @ Railroad Green

A candlelight peace vigil will be held on Thursday, December 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Railroad Green, Railroad Avenue in Warwick, NY (rain date: Friday, December 22).

According to the organizers, the date was chosen to coincide with the winter solstice, an event that has been celebrated by various cultures throughout human history as a time of returning light and hope.

“It is our wish to provide an opportunity to bring our neighbors together during this period of dwindling light and concern for human suffering around the world and to rekindle the holidays’ messages of light and hope, not just for ourselves, but for all humankind. We believe this will be a beautiful community experience where we can witness our collective longing for a more peaceful world,” shared Beverly Braxton, founder and director of We the People Warwick who are organizing the event.

All are invited to this community experience to, as the organizers say, “witness our collective longing for a more peaceful world.”

Participants are asked to bring a white candle, if possible. A limited number of candles will be provided onsite by the Warwick Ecumenical Council.

Public Hearing @ Village Hall
Jan 16 @ 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Public Hearing @ Village Hall

There will be a public hearing on the 16th day of January 2024 at 7:30 p.m., at Village Hall, 77 Main Street, Warwick, New York 10990 to introduce Community Choice Aggregation (aka “CCA”). I hope you will plan to attend this meeting and become informed about CCA, especially if you are a Village resident.

At its heart, CCA is very simple —

  • The Village will join with other municipalities to negotiate with electricity suppliers.

  • If the negotiations lead to an agreement at a good price, the residents of the Village will potentially gain access to a lower cost for electricity than they would find individually.

  • O&R will continue to be the only electricity delivery company for Warwick, but O&R will no longer be the default supplier of electricity.

  • CCAs sometimes can provide renewably generated electricity and/or give participating customers community solar credits — which is what makes this such a big (and good) deal.

  • Everyone has the choice to opt out of the new default supplier, and could go back to O&R or select another ESCO.

While CCA is essentially simple, understanding it can quickly get complex.

How many of us understand the difference between our electricity delivery company and our electricity supply company? I mean, who reads and understands their electricity bill???

How many of us understand what an ESCO is or know how to get information on which ESCO might best suit our interests?

How do wholesale electricity markets work and how could participating in Community Choice Aggregation save money for everyone in our community?

As described above, CCA is simple but complex, which means it really behooves us to become well informed about how it works. So please try to attend the meeting on Tuesday the 16th of January 2024 at Warwick Village Town Hall. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM. And please forward this email to your friends.

Warwick Repair Cafe @ Warwick Senior Center (behind Town Hall)

Repair Cafe | May 18, 2024

Mark your calendars and enter the date in your phone for the next Repair Cafe on Saturday, May 18, from 10 am to 2 pm at the Warwick Senior Center at 132 King’s Highway in Warwick.

While you’re gathering items (limit 2 per person) you need fixed, would you please check if you have an adult bicycle you’d like to donate? Rich White, our bicycle repair specialist, will coordinate delivering the donated bikes to people in our community who need basic transportation. If you can bring your bicycle to the Repair Cafe, Rich will take care of getting your bike to someone who needs it.
There will be another special feature at the May Repair Cafe, when we recognize 15-year-old Wyatt Dul as an “honorary member” of the Repair Cafe Volunteer team. Our knife sharpening expert, Fred Rossi, taught Wyatt the “fine points” of knife sharpening after Wyatt showed an interest in the skill at a past Repair Cafe. Wyatt has taken that skill to the next level, sharpening knives for neighbors and friends, even earning money for his services!
Please continue to spread the word about this unique and totally free service to Warwick and neighboring towns!
