Dear Warwick Valley School Community,
The opioid epidemic is ongoing in the United States. The highly potent opioid fentanyl is becoming more prevalent in overdoses and deaths. Fentanyl is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and has been found in cocaine, counterfeit pills, heroin, methamphetamine, and crack cocaine. The Department of Justice and the Drug Enforcement Administration have the following statistics to share.
-
DEA Lab testing reveals that 4 out of every 10 pills with fentanyl contain a potentially lethal dose.
-
Criminal drug networks are mass-producing fake pills.
-
Fake prescription pills are easily accessible and are often sold on social media, making them available to our children.
-
Drug traffickers use fake pills to exploit the opioid crisis and prescription drug misuse. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 100,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in the most recent 12-month reporting period.
It is paramount that we speak to our children about the dangers of fentanyl!
On Monday, January 23, 2023, Warwick Valley Middle School, Warwick Valley High School, and the Warwick Prevention Coalition will host a community event for our families to discuss the fentanyl epidemic. Middle School and High School students are welcome to attend this event with a parent on Monday, January 23, 2023, at 6:30 PM in the Middle School cafetorium. The evening will include viewing the fentanyl documentary Dead on Arrival,by Dominic Tierno, and an open discussion with our Warwick Police Department, Prevention Coalition, and School Representatives.
