Title: Babel
Dates: June 3 -June 25, 2023
Opening Reception: June 3, 4–7pm
Gallery Hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 1-4pm
The Amity Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition titled Babel by Michael Netter, June 3 – 25, 2023. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 3, from 4-7 pm.
Michael Netter began his artistic career as a videographer working with Andy Warhol in the 70’s. Later he worked as a design consultant for major brands like
Coca Cola and American Express. His artwork, paintings and stencils, involves
iconography…symbols and signs.
In this series of paintings, Netter challenges viewers to find meaning where there is none. His work often involves iconography – visual symbols, signs and artifacts…small forms that stand for big ideas.
He scrambles and obscures familiar letters/numbers and makes them indecipherable. Can’t be read, only read into. Unsolvable puzzles. Meaning can only be inferred. The letter and number forms come from Netter’s own handwriting converted into reusable, hand-cut stencils. He layers images and colors to connote the passage of time (palimpsest). An “all-over” design suggests they are sections of a wider landscape. His paintings are unrefined, more like images randomly seen on a city wall.
Netter is represented by ACA Galleries in NYC.
